What do you think when talking about a patent costing 1.25 million US dollars?

License? Indemnity of infringement?

1.25 million US are absolutely not a big deal for both of the above issues. But how about government filing fee?

One and half years ago, Angiotech International(a biotech. corp.) was asked to pay 1.25 million in application filing fees for a patent having about 10,000 claims. (File Attachment: Fee Due.pdf)

It’s lucky that the applicant is a small entity, otherwise the fee would have been over 2 million US dollars.

But a comment of Patently-O cited “Interestingly, if you look at the case on public PAIR, they actually filed 13,305 claims, but the USPTO "only" charged them for 9,999 - it appears that the PTO computer overflows at 10,000.”
